Hydro excavation is used as an alternative to traditional digging methods in cases where access to a subsurface utility is needed but other utilities lie near by. Hydro excavation uses vacuum and high pressure water to remove soil with minimal to no disruption to utility as well as surrounding utilities. This method is especially useful when you are working with or around underground gas/propane lines and electrical which could be detrimental.

Other uses for hydro excavation include-

* Potholing or day-lighting which is the process of locating/ exposing an underground utility. With hydro excavation this can be done with minimal disturbance to area of work as well as the utility.
* Installation of communication poles, sonotubes, etc.  Using a traditional auger to remove soil could cause damage to subsurface utilities. With hydro excavation there is little to no chance of damage to the utility.
